Best free zone in Dubai for UK founders: compared
Know your activity already? Book a call for an all-in quote โ
The UAE has dozens of free zones, and the setup agents who rank for "best free zone" usually sell one of them. This page compares the six we get asked about most by people leaving the UK. Every fact comes from the zone's own website, read in October 2026 and linked at the bottom. We have left out fees on purpose: packages change often, and we quote one all-in price for your setup instead. We are agents for RAKEZ, IFZA, Meydan and RAK ICC, and we will still tell you when another zone suits you better.
How to choose a free zone
Five questions decide it. Answer them in this order and the shortlist usually drops to two zones.
- What is your activity? Each licence covers a defined list of activities, and zones group them differently. A consultant, a trader holding stock and a content creator need different licences. Some activities, such as financial services or media advertising, need extra approvals.
- How many visas do you need? Count yourself, any partner who will work in the business, and staff. Your spouse and children are sponsored as dependants (see sponsoring your family). In several zones the visa count depends on the office you lease.
- Do you need a real office? A solo founder can usually start on a flexi-desk or co-working seat. A team, a showroom or stock needs space, and that changes the zone. See do I need a physical office.
- Where are your clients? Free zone companies can trade internationally and with other businesses. Selling direct to UAE consumers or to the local government often points to a mainland licence instead (free zone vs mainland).
- How will you bank? The licence takes days; the corporate bank account often takes weeks. Banks look at your activity, your source of funds and where you live more than at the zone name, but a clean activity description and the right documents make the difference (why accounts get rejected).
There is a sixth question that UAE agents rarely ask. If you stay UK tax resident, or you keep running the company from the UK, the company itself can end up UK tax resident through central management and control. Read can a Dubai company be UK tax resident before you choose a zone for tax reasons.
Six free zones compared
Qualitative, as at October 2026, from each zone's own site. "Banking perception" is our read of how straightforward account opening tends to be for a UK founder, not a rating from the zone.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IFZA (Dubai Silicon Oasis) | Consultants, service businesses, general trading | Visa package set in your proposal | Virtual or flexi options for some licences | Remote incorporation; no timeframe stated | Good; IFZA names Wio and Mashreq as partners |
| Meydan (Dubai) | Solo founders, online and service businesses | Added when the business needs them | Flexi-desk included with the standard licence | Fawri: under 60 minutes; standard: within 24 hours | Mixed; depends on activity mix |
| RAKEZ (Ras Al Khaimah) | Physical goods, industrial, e-commerce, cost-conscious service firms | Linked to facility; flexi desk allows one | Flexi desk up to warehouses and land | "A matter of days"; instant licence offer | Good with a clear activity |

Which zone fits which UK founder
A UK consultant or contractor going independent
IFZA or Meydan. Both are in Dubai, both let you incorporate without flying out, and both suit a professional licence with one or two visas. If your clients are UK corporates who will check you out, DMCC's name carries more weight; for most consultancies the client is buying your work, not your address. Our free zone guide for consultants goes into this.
An online seller or importer holding stock
RAKEZ, for its warehouses and industrial zones, or DMCC if you trade commodities. A licence that covers trading goods differs from a services licence, so describe what you sell in detail at the start.
A content creator or media business
SHAMS was built for media. If you advertise on social media, SHAMS notes you may also need an Advertiser Permit. Read influencer visas in Dubai for the visa side.
A founder who wants the lowest running cost
The Sharjah zones and RAKEZ usually come out cheapest once visas are added, but "cheapest" depends on your visa count and renewal years. Our cheapest licence guide explains what to compare.
A family moving together
Pick the zone for the business, then check it can sponsor your residence visa so you can sponsor your family. Where you live in the UAE does not have to match the emirate of your licence.

Holding structures: RAK ICC
RAK ICC, the Ras Al Khaimah International Corporate Centre, is an offshore company registry, not a free zone. A RAK ICC company owns shares, property and investments; on its own it does not trade in the UAE or sponsor visas. UK founders with several businesses or several shareholders often put a RAK ICC holding company above one of the free zone companies on this page, which then holds the licence and the visas. We are a RAK ICC agent. Read RAK ICC for UK founders for how the two tiers fit and the UK tax points.
How we set it up from the UK
You talk to us before you pick a zone. We ask about your activity, visas, clients and UK tax position, then recommend a zone and give you one all-in price covering the licence, your visa and the bank account support. We prepare the application, you sign online, and the company is formed while you are still in the UK. When you fly out, we line up the medical, Emirates ID and bank meetings so the trip is short. Our company formation service page has the detail, and how long company setup takes covers the timeline.
Questions people ask
What is the best free zone in Dubai for a UK founder?
There is no single best zone. For a UK consultant or service business that wants a Dubai address and one or two visas, IFZA and Meydan are the usual shortlist. DMCC suits trading businesses and founders whose clients care about a well-known name. RAKEZ suits physical goods, warehousing and founders happy to work from Ras Al Khaimah. SHAMS and SPC in Sharjah suit creators, media and lean online businesses. Start from your activity and your visa count, then compare.
Which UAE free zone has the fastest company setup?
Several zones now issue a licence online in under an hour for simple cases. As at October 2026, Meydan says its Fawri licence for single-shareholder companies is issued in under 60 minutes after you complete the application and payment, SHAMS says under 60 minutes, and SPC advertises an instant licence. DMCC says its process takes around 10 working days. The licence is rarely the slow part: the visa, Emirates ID and bank account take longer.
Can I set up a UAE free zone company from the UK without flying out?
Yes, for the company itself. IFZA, Meydan, DMCC and SHAMS all say on their own sites that incorporation can be done online without being in the UAE. You need to be in the UAE for the residence visa steps, the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics, and banks often want to meet you.
How many visas do I get with a free zone licence?
It depends on the zone and the space you lease. DMCC links visa numbers to the size of your office. RAKEZ says a flexi desk is limited to one visa. SHAMS allows up to 50 visas per licence depending on activity and office space, with a business plan needed above 10. Meydan lets you add visas when the business needs them. Tell us your headcount, including family, and we match the package to it.
Is a free zone company better than a mainland company?
A free zone company suits most UK founders who sell to clients outside the UAE or to other businesses. If you need to sell directly to UAE consumers, run a shop, or bid for local government work, a mainland licence may fit better. Our free zone vs mainland guide sets out the trade-offs.
Why do you not show free zone fees?
Packages change month to month, and the cheapest headline price often leaves out visas, renewals and the bank account. We quote one all-in price for your activity and visa count instead, so you can compare like with like.
