Who can you sponsor as a UAE dependent?
The short answer is your immediate family: a spouse and your children. Extended family, parents, siblings, in-laws, sit in a separate and more restricted category, and the rules there are meaningfully different.
This guide focuses on the standard family unit: spouse and children. If you are asking about sponsoring parents, that is a separate application with its own income requirements and conditions.
How the sponsorship eligibility works
To sponsor dependents, you need three things in place first: a valid UAE residence visa in your own name, an active UAE company or employment relationship to support the visa, and a tenancy contract registered in your name (Ejari, in Dubai).
Your visa type matters. Freezone employment visas, mainland employment visas, investor/partner visas, and Golden Visas all permit family sponsorship. Freelance permit visas usually do too, though income documentation requirements are stricter when there is no employer payslip involved.
The income threshold is the practical gating factor for most people. There is a minimum monthly income you must demonstrate to the authorities, and it applies per family unit, not per dependent. Fall below that figure and the application will be rejected regardless of your other circumstances.
The income threshold and how to evidence it
If you are employed by a mainland or freezone company, a salary certificate from your employer is the standard evidence. If you own your company and pay yourself via payslip, the same applies. If you draw income as a trade licence holder, director dividends, or in a less conventional structure, you will need to show bank statements and sometimes audited accounts.
The threshold is set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). As at October 2026, u.ae sets it at a minimum salary of AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. It has moved before and can move again, so check the current figure before you apply.
Age limits for children, the detail that catches families out

If you have a son of 24, his visa will need to move to his own sponsorship, through work or study, within the year. Building that timeline in at the outset avoids scrambling later.
Documents you will typically need
Applications vary by emirate and by the authority processing them (GDRFA in Dubai, ICP federally), but the standard set includes:
- Your own passport and residence visa copies
- Your salary certificate or income evidence
- Tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai)
- Spouse and children’s passports
- Marriage certificate (attested and translated into Arabic)
- Children’s birth certificates (attested and translated)
- Medical fitness certificates (required for dependants aged 18 and over)
- Emirates ID application for each dependent once the visa is approved
Attestation is the part most families underestimate. UK documents need to be legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and then attested by the UAE Embassy in London before they are accepted. If you are already in Dubai when you realise you need attested documents, getting originals sent and processed takes time.
Timing: when to start the process
The families we work with who handle this smoothly are the ones who start the dependent visa process alongside, or immediately after, their own visa application, not as an afterthought once they arrive.
School registration in Dubai often requires a residence visa or at minimum proof that one is in progress. If your children need to start school in September, working backwards from that date determines when your own visa needs to be issued. The margin for error is smaller than it looks.
Where your own visa type changes the picture
Golden Visa holders get wider family rights: as at October 2026, the ICP says they can sponsor spouses and children regardless of the children’s age, as well as parents. Green Visa holders can also sponsor first-degree relatives, according to u.ae. Can I sponsor my spouse as soon as I arrive in the UAE?

The whole family sequence takes time, so building at least a few weeks into your timeline before school or work start dates is sensible.
Is there a minimum salary to sponsor a spouse in the UAE?

Can I sponsor my daughter regardless of her age?
u.ae lists unmarried daughters among the family members a resident may sponsor, with no age limit given. Married daughters cannot be sponsored by a parent, they fall under their husband's sponsorship. This is one of the areas where individual circumstances genuinely affect the answer, and it is worth getting it confirmed for your specific situation.
What happens to dependent visas if my own visa is cancelled?
Dependent visas are tied to the sponsor's visa. If your residence visa is cancelled, through a job change, company closure or any other reason, your dependents' visas fall away with it. As at October 2026, u.ae says dependants get a grace period of six months from the expiry or cancellation of their visas to obtain a new residence permit. If you are between visas for any reason, taking urgent advice on the family's status is not optional.
