What the GDRFA actually does
The GDRFA is the Dubai government body responsible for all residency matters in the emirate. You will often see it typed as GDFRA or GDRF, but it is the same body. It issues entry permits, converts them into residence visas, and handles renewals and cancellations. Since April 2022 there is no residence sticker in your passport: the ICP confirmed that the Emirates ID card now serves as proof of residence.
Think of it as the local branch office for immigration, it applies federal UAE law but runs the actual processing for Dubai-based residents and sponsors. If your life in the UAE is centred on Dubai, the GDRFA will be the agency you interact with most.
How the GDRFA fits into the UAE’s broader system
The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, and immigration operates on two levels.
At the federal level, the ICP sets the rules: which visa categories exist, what the requirements are, how long visas last. Dubai runs its own processing through the GDRFA; for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates, the ICP processes residency directly.
Your visa category (employment, golden, investor, freelance) is defined federally. Which office processes it depends on where your sponsor or free zone is registered. A UK founder setting up in DMCC or IFZA goes through the GDRFA. The same person setting up in RAKEZ goes through the ICP instead.
This matters practically. Applications, fees, timelines and the specific documents required can vary slightly between the two. The GDRFA is generally well-resourced and the processing systems for Dubai are among the better-developed in the region.
What the GDRFA handles for UK movers
If you are relocating to Dubai from the UK, you will likely encounter the GDRFA at several points:

A visa cancellation matters more than people expect. If you leave the UAE without formally cancelling a residence visa, it does not simply lapse. This is relevant for UK movers who later need to demonstrate clean emigration records, and for anyone whose UK tax position depends on the timing of their departure.
The GDRFA and golden visas
The UAE’s Golden Visa, a five- or ten-year renewable residence that requires no employer sponsor, is popular among UK founders, high-net-worth individuals and senior professionals relocating to Dubai. The GDRFA processes golden visas for Dubai-based applicants.
Golden visa holders need no sponsor, but some categories need a recommendation or confirmation from another Dubai entity first (the Dubai Land Department confirms the property for real estate investors, for example). The GDRFA remains the body that issues and renews the residence for Dubai.
Can you hold a golden visa and live elsewhere?
Yes, within limits. Most residence visas lapse after more than six months outside the UAE; u.ae lists the ability to stay outside the UAE for longer than that as a Golden visa benefit, as at October 2026. This makes it relevant for people who want a genuine UAE residency base while travelling or managing business interests internationally. The specifics of how long absences affect your status depend on your individual circumstances.
The GDRFA app and online services
The GDRFA runs a dedicated app (GDRFA Dubai), its website and the Amer service centres. Between them you can:
- Check application status
- Pay certain fees
- Apply for some visa types, including visitor visas for family
- Access smart gates at Dubai airports if enrolled
How to check your visa status
For a Dubai-issued visa, use the visa status or file enquiry service on the GDRFA website or in the GDRFA Dubai app, with your file number or passport details. For a visa issued in another emirate, use the ICP’s smart services at icp.gov.ae. Your sponsor (employer or free zone) can also confirm the status from their side.
For most substantive residency work, new visas, renewals, category changes, you will work through a sponsor, a typing centre, or a free zone authority who files on your behalf. The digital tools are useful for tracking and minor transactions, not for replacing the underlying process.
GDRFA versus ICP: which one do I need?
A common point of confusion. Here is the short version.
The GDRFA handles your residence visa in Dubai: issue, renewals and cancellations.
The ICP (the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) handles the Emirates ID card itself. DNRD, a name you still see on older documents, was the GDRFA’s former name. Since 2022 the residence and Emirates ID applications are made on one combined form. In practice, your free zone or employer will coordinate both.
If you are renewing a visa, you deal with the GDRFA. If your Emirates ID card has expired or needs updating, that goes to the ICP. The distinction matters if you are chasing a specific document, contacting the wrong agency wastes time.
What this means if you are mid-move
For UK nationals in the process of relocating, the GDRFA is not a body you necessarily contact directly. Your free zone, employer, or a structured setup process handles most of the interactions on your behalf. What matters is understanding the sequence: entry permit first, then status change, medical and Emirates ID biometrics, then the residence permit on your Emirates ID. The GDRFA sits behind each of those steps for Dubai-based residents.
Getting the sequence right, and not letting permits lapse between stages, is where things go wrong for people who try to manage it themselves.

What does GDRFA stand for?
GDRFA stands for General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. As at October 2026 its website also uses the name General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs - Dubai, with the same GDRFA Dubai abbreviation. It is the Dubai government agency responsible for managing residence visas, entry permits and status changes for people living in or moving to Dubai.
Is the GDRFA the same as UAE federal immigration?
No. The UAE's federal immigration authority is the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security). The GDRFA runs residency for Dubai; outside Dubai, the ICP handles residency files itself. In practice, your visa is processed by whichever body covers the emirate where your sponsor or company is based.
Does every Dubai visa go through the GDRFA?
Most do, employment visas, investor visas, dependant visas, golden visas sponsored by a Dubai entity, and most freelance visas linked to a Dubai free zone. If your company or sponsor is in another emirate (for example RAKEZ or Abu Dhabi free zones), the ICP handles your file rather than the GDRFA.
Can I deal with the GDRFA directly, or does a sponsor have to do it?
Most residency transactions require a sponsor, typically your employer, a free zone authority, or the government entity sponsoring a golden visa. The GDRFA's online services (the GDRFA Dubai app and website) and its Amer centres allow individuals to track applications, pay fees and handle some renewals, but the underlying process still involves a sponsor or typing centre for complex transactions.
What happens at the visa medical test?
A medical fitness test, blood test and chest X-ray, primarily screening for tuberculosis and certain communicable conditions, is required for residence visa applicants aged 18 and over. In Dubai it is done at a Dubai Health Authority approved medical fitness centre once your entry permit is active, not by the GDRFA itself. This is a standard step in the process, not a cause for concern in the vast majority of cases.
