UAE Golden Visa for UK citizens

Long-term UAE residence without a sponsor, for you and your family, applied for with the UK side planned around it.

In short
The UAE Golden visa is a long-term residence visa you hold without an employer or company sponsor. As at October 2026 the government lists five categories: investors (public investment or real estate), entrepreneurs, people with exceptional talent or rare specialisations, outstanding students, and humanitarian pioneers. For most UK movers the route is property: in Dubai, GDRFA issues a 10-year Golden residence to owners of property worth at least AED 2 million, and mortgaged property is accepted. You can sponsor your spouse and children, and you can stay outside the UAE for longer than a standard visa allows. It does not change your UK tax. We check which route you qualify for, prepare the application and plan the UK side with it.

Most people who ask us about the Golden visa want two things from it: a UAE base that does not depend on a job or a company, and freedom to spend long spells away. It gives both. People also expect a tax result from it, and the visa does not deliver one: your UK tax still turns on the Statutory Residence Test (the myth explained).

Who it's for

  • UK buyers of Dubai property worth AED 2 million or more, including with a mortgage
  • Founders and investors with capital in the UAE
  • Senior executives, doctors, scientists, engineers and creatives who may fit the talent categories
  • Families who want residence that survives a job change or a company closure
  • Owners who split their year between the UAE and elsewhere

What's included

  • An eligibility check against the current category rules before you spend anything
  • Property route: the Dubai Land Department valuation or title evidence, joint ownership and mortgage points
  • Talent and specialist routes: the recommendation letters and evidence each category asks for
  • The application through GDRFA Dubai or ICP, medical, biometrics and Emirates ID
  • Visas for your spouse and children on your Golden visa
  • The UK side: how the move and the visa fit your Statutory Residence Test position

The property route in Dubai

As at October 2026, GDRFA Dubai states that you must own one or more properties with a total value of at least AED 2 million, certified by a Dubai Land Department property status statement (a valuation from a DLD-licensed office may be accepted). Mortgaged property is accepted, a lien is placed on the property for the life of the residence, and for joint ownership your own share must reach AED 2 million. GDRFA gives the permit a 10-year validity, renewable on the same conditions (GDRFA, investor Golden residence).

The federal portal's summary table shows five years for real estate investment, while GDRFA Dubai's own service page shows ten. We confirm the term with the issuing authority for your property before you rely on it. Buying off-plan or across emirates raises further questions, covered in Golden visa through property.

Can a freelancer or consultant get a Golden visa?

Not as a freelancer as such: there is no freelance category. A consultant may qualify through property, through the entrepreneur route, or through a specialist category if their field and credentials fit. The Green visa is the five-year self-sponsored route the government lists for freelancers and the self-employed (u.ae). For content creators, the Ministry of Culture recommends creative applicants (our page for creators). Compare the routes in Golden, investor or freelance visa.

What the Golden visa does, and what it does not

  • It does: give you residence without an employer or company sponsor; let you sponsor your spouse and children; let you stay outside the UAE beyond the six months that ends a standard visa.
  • It does not: make you UAE tax resident on its own, end your UK tax residence, or grant citizenship.

If you are leaving the UK, the Golden visa is one piece of the move. The order in which you sell, buy, leave and spend days in the UK decides the tax outcome, and that is a UK tax advice question.

Common questions

Can UK citizens get a UAE Golden visa?

Yes. Nationality is not a condition. You qualify through one of the categories: investment or property, entrepreneurship, talent or specialisation, outstanding study, or humanitarian work.

How much property do I need for a Golden visa in Dubai?

As at October 2026, GDRFA Dubai requires one or more properties worth at least AED 2 million in total, certified through the Dubai Land Department. Mortgaged property is accepted, with a lien registered.

How long is the Golden visa valid?

Five or ten years depending on the category, renewable. GDRFA Dubai gives the property route 10 years; we confirm the term for your case with the issuing authority.

Can my family be on my Golden visa?

Yes. Golden visa holders can sponsor a spouse and children.

Does the Golden visa make my income tax-free?

No. It is a residence permit. Your UK tax depends on the Statutory Residence Test, and UK rental income and some pensions stay taxable in the UK whatever visa you hold.

Can I live outside the UAE and keep a Golden visa?

Golden visa holders can stay outside the UAE for longer than the six months that ends a standard residence visa, according to the government portal.

Can a freelancer get a Golden visa?

Not through a freelance category. A freelancer may qualify through property or a specialist category. The Green visa is the five-year self-sponsored route for freelancers.
