RAKEZ from the UK: the low-cost Ras Al Khaimah route, and who it suits

RAKEZ is the zone UK founders tend to overlook because it is not in Dubai. For the right business it is often the better fit, and it is one we know well: Dubai Transition Consultants is a RAKEZ agent. The facts below come from RAKEZ's own website as at October 2026. For the wider comparison, see the free zone hub.
Who RAKEZ suits
- Online sellers and importers who need warehouse space.
- Manufacturing, assembly and light industrial businesses that need land or a factory unit.
- Service founders who want a lower running cost and do not need a Dubai address on the licence.
- Founders who want a mainland licence as well as, or instead of, a free zone one: RAKEZ issues both.
RAKEZ suits you less if you want a Dubai licence for client perception, or if you will sell into the UAE mainland without an agent or distributor. Read Dubai vs Abu Dhabi vs RAK for the emirate choice.
Licences, entities and RAKEZ zones
- Activities: more than 3,000, RAKEZ says.
- Free zone licence types: industrial, commercial, educational, e-commerce, individual or professional, general trading, media and service.
- Non-free zone (mainland) licences: industrial, commercial and professional.
- Entities: Free Zone Establishment for one shareholder, Free Zone Company for more, or a branch. Up to 50 shareholders.
- Freelancer permit: available for sole practitioners.
- Zones: Al Hamra, Al Ghail and Al Hulaila industrial zones; Al Nakheel Business Zone for startups, freelancers and SMEs; Al Hamra Business Zone; and the RAKEZ Academic Zone.
RAKEZ limits what goes on one licence. A service licence takes two activities from any group. A commercial licence takes five from the same group or two from different groups. An industrial licence takes two from the same group. Commercial and service activities cannot share a licence, so a consultant who also sells products may need two. Get the activity plan right before you apply.
Visas
RAKEZ links visas to your facility. It states that flexi desks are limited to one visa, so a second visa for a partner or employee means a bigger facility. A single-shareholder company gets an investor visa; a company with several shareholders uses partner visas. Shareholders can also choose to hold a visa from elsewhere. RAKEZ sponsors company visas and registers your company on the E-Channel immigration system for you. Your spouse and children come on your visa as dependants (family sponsorship).
Two RAKEZ rules matter for UK founders. The company manager must be UAE resident. And the owner of a professional individual establishment must do the work in person, which RAKEZ says means living in the UAE.
Office and facilities
RAKEZ offers flexi facilities, standard and executive offices, shell and core units, warehouses in several sizes, land for development, and co-working through its Compass Coworking Centre. A solo consultant usually starts on a flexi desk. A seller holding stock takes a warehouse, and that also opens up more visas.
Timeline
RAKEZ describes three steps: choose your package, submit the application and documents, and receive the licence. It says businesses can be ready to operate "in a matter of days" once documents are in, and promotes an instant licence process online. You can submit requests through its Portal 360 from the UK. Licences run for one year, or three years for certain free zone licences, and RAKEZ issues renewal quotes two months before expiry.
Banking
RAKEZ offers step-by-step support with the application and documents for business bank account opening. Its FAQ notes that you need a residence visa to open a bank account, so plan the visa first. A clear, narrow activity list and source-of-funds documents make the account easier. Our banking service prepares the file.
How we set up a RAKEZ company from the UK
As a RAKEZ agent we handle the application with RAKEZ for you. We start by mapping your activities against RAKEZ's licence rules, so a consultant who also sells goods does not end up with the wrong licence. We size the facility to your visa count, give you one all-in price, and file the application while you are still in the UK. When you fly out we book the medical, Emirates ID and bank meetings together, and we diary the renewal so it is never missed. We also check the UK tax side, including whether the company could become UK resident if you run it from the UK (central management and control). See our company formation service.
Questions people ask
What is RAKEZ?
RAKEZ is the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone, a government licensing authority in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. As at October 2026 it says it licenses more than 3,000 business activities and offers both free zone and non-free zone (mainland) licences.
Can I live in Dubai with a RAKEZ company?
Yes. Your residence visa is a UAE visa, so you can live in Dubai while your company is licensed in Ras Al Khaimah. The company itself is the limit: RAKEZ says a free zone entity cannot conduct business activities outside the RAKEZ free zone area, and may sell into the UAE mainland only through an agent, distributor or similar licensed party. Selling to clients abroad is unaffected.
How many visas does a RAKEZ flexi desk allow?
RAKEZ states that flexi desks are limited to one visa. More visas need a larger facility, such as an office. A single-shareholder company can get an investor visa; a company with more than one shareholder uses partner visas.
Does the company manager have to live in the UAE?
RAKEZ says a company manager must be resident in the UAE. Owners of a professional individual establishment must carry out the activity in person, which RAKEZ says means residing in the UAE. Plan who will be manager before you apply, especially if you are still in the UK.
How long is a RAKEZ licence valid?
RAKEZ says licences are generally valid for one year from issue, and certain free zone licences can be issued and renewed for three years. It warns that a licence not renewed within six months of expiry risks being struck off.
Is DTC a RAKEZ agent?
Yes. Dubai Transition Consultants is a RAKEZ agent, so we handle RAKEZ applications for clients with the authority. We still recommend another zone when it suits your activity better.
How much does a RAKEZ licence cost?
RAKEZ pricing depends on the licence type, the facility, the visa count and whether you take one or three years. We quote one all-in price covering the licence, visa and bank account support rather than publishing authority fees.
