When UK founders search for the cheapest free zone in the UAE, the Sharjah zones come up again and again. SHAMS and SPC both sell a fast online licence and a lean package. This page sets out what each says it offers, from its own website as at October 2026, and where each fits. For the wider comparison, see the free zone hub.

Who the Sharjah zones suit

  • Content creators, influencers and media businesses: SHAMS was built for media.
  • Consultants and freelancers who want a company and a residence visa at a low running cost.
  • Publishers, e-commerce sellers and online businesses: SPC's core is publishing, with e-commerce and logistics partners.
  • Founders who will live in Dubai but do not need a Dubai licence.

They suit you less if your clients expect a Dubai address on the licence, or if you want the name recognition of DMCC.

SHAMS free zone

  • Where: Sharjah. Set up in 2017 by Amiri decree.
  • Activities: up to five on one licence, across different sectors, which you can update after incorporation.
  • Company name: companies carry an "LLC" suffix rather than "FZ".
  • Visas: up to 50 per licence, depending on activity and office space; a business plan and bank statements are needed above 10.
  • Office: packages include a co-working space with a lease agreement.
  • Speed: SHAMS says a licence in under 60 minutes, through a fully digital setup.
  • Non-residents: SHAMS says you do not need to be a UAE resident to set up.
  • Creators: advertising or marketing on social media may need an Advertiser Permit as well.
  • Banking: SHAMS gives you a list of recommended banking partners once you are registered and offers account opening support.

SPC free zone

  • Activities: more than 2,000.
  • Licences: an instant licence, a digital business licence with company documents, and a customs code for import and export.
  • Ownership and capital: 100% foreign ownership and zero paid share capital, SPC says.
  • Visas: SPC advertises residency in 5 working days, onsite immigration services and family visa processing.
  • Office: a lease agreement comes with every licence; options run from co-working to offices, retail units and warehouses.
  • Speed: SPC advertises an instant licence.
  • Banking: SPC offers corporate banking assistance and says its instant licence comes with a guaranteed bank account.

SHAMS or SPC?

For a creator or media business, SHAMS is the natural home, and its five-activity licence lets you add consultancy or e-commerce alongside content. For a lean online seller or a consultant who expects to hire, SPC's warehouse options and quick residency processing are worth a look. Both price visas, renewals and add-ons differently, so compare the all-in figure for your plan, not the headline licence.

Timeline

Both zones issue the licence online, in under an hour on their own figures. SHAMS notes that an application returned for corrections resets the clock, and anything submitted after 11:00 counts from the next working day. The residence visa, Emirates ID and bank account take longer and need you in the UAE. See how long setup takes.

Banking

Banks look at your activity, your source of funds and your residence more than at the zone. A creator with income from several platforms needs that income documented. Both zones offer banking assistance; SPC's "guaranteed bank account" applies to its instant licence on its own terms, so read them. Our banking service prepares the file, and why accounts get rejected covers the common problems.

How we set up a Sharjah free zone company from the UK

We compare SHAMS and SPC against your activity and visa plan, and against RAKEZ, which competes on cost. You get one all-in price covering the licence, your visa and bank account support. We file the application online while you are in the UK, check whether you need an Advertiser Permit if you create content, and book your medical, Emirates ID and bank meetings into one trip. For the UK tax side of creator income, read influencer visas and the tax bit nobody mentions. Full detail is on our company formation service page.

Questions people ask

What is SHAMS free zone?

SHAMS is Sharjah Media City, a free zone for media and creative businesses in Sharjah, set up in 2017 by Amiri decree. As at October 2026 it also licenses consultancy, trading and e-commerce activities, and says you can combine up to five activities on one licence, even across sectors.

What is SPC free zone?

SPC is the Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone. Publishing is its core, but as at October 2026 it says it offers more than 2,000 business activities, an instant licence, and a lease agreement with every licence.

Which is the cheapest free zone in the UAE?

There is no fixed answer because zones run offers and price visas and renewals differently. The Sharjah zones, SHAMS and SPC, and RAKEZ are often among the lowest-cost routes once a visa is included. Compare the all-in price for your activity, visa count and renewal years, not the headline licence.

Can I set up a SHAMS company without being a UAE resident?

Yes. SHAMS says you do not need to be a UAE resident to set up, and that the whole process from application to licence happens online. You come to the UAE later for the residence visa steps.

How many visas can I get with SHAMS or SPC?

SHAMS allows up to 50 visas per licence, depending on your activity and office space, and asks for a business plan and bank statements above 10. SPC does not publish a visa cap on its home page; it says residency can be issued in 5 working days and offers family visa processing. Ask for the visa terms in writing for your package.

Do influencers need anything beyond a SHAMS licence?

Possibly. SHAMS notes that advertising or marketing activities, especially on social media, may need an Advertiser Permit. If you earn from sponsored content, check this before you start posting from the UAE.

Can I live in Dubai with a Sharjah free zone company?

Yes. Your residence visa lets you live anywhere in the UAE, so many founders licensed in Sharjah live in Dubai. Your company operates under its Sharjah licence.
